POSTING VERBIAGE TO CORRECT THE FALSE AND MISLEADING
INFORMATION BEING SPREAD ABOUT THE UPCOMING REFERENDUM
This post is to correct the false information being disseminated by some individuals who clearly have no understanding of referendums or the laws governing them, but first, it should be noted that this referendum was NOT initiated by the Town of Stephenson Board of Supervisors. The referendum was requested by property owners within the Town, so the Board of Supervisors has simply performed a function at the request of their constituents.
Next, per Wisconsin State Statutes, tax levies imposed by electoral referendum can NOT increase more than the amount specified in the Resolution – or in this case, $433,132 – in any year the referendum is in place. In other words, if this referendum were still in place in 50 years, the maximum amount that could ever be received by this referendum would still be $433,132.
The amount of the levy was calculated by using a multiplier of .00075 / $1,000 of assessed value on each parcel within the Town of Stephenson. As a simplified example, a parcel with an assessed value of $100,000 would pay an additional tax levy of $75.00 under this referendum.
Additionally, the Wisconsin State Statutes mandate that the funds raised by a referendum levy MUST be used for the specific purpose stated in the Resolution – or in this case, “…for the purpose of road repairs and maintenance.”
In closing, this referendum was requested by the property owners and was set at the lowest rate possible that would still acquire the funds needed to improve and maintain the 212 miles of roads in the Town of Stephenson.
